Which Staghorn Ferns to Move Indoors First in Summer: Heat-Tolerant, Heat-Sensitive and Summer-Dormant
Bifurcatum, willinckii and coronarium take the heat with airflow and shade; madagascariense, andinum and quadridichotomum should move into air conditioning with a fan before July; superbum and wallichii stall in the heat, which is dormancy, not death.

From July to September Taiwan runs around 35°C by day, above 28°C at night, at 70–80% humidity. Not every staghorn minds: some can stay on the balcony with good airflow, some should be indoors with air conditioning before July, and some simply stop and rest. Shade, fans and watering times that apply to all are in summer heat and humidity care; this piece is only about species.
Heat-tolerant, stay where they are
P. bifurcatum, P. willinckii, P. coronarium, P. elephantotis and P. hillii. Bifurcatum and willinckii pass with airflow alone. Coronarium and elephantotis enjoy heat; elephantotis drinks hard in summer, so do not let it go dry for long. Hillii takes heat but not heat and drought together, so keep shade and water up. For this group the work is airflow and shade, not relocation.
Heat-sensitive, move first
P. madagascariense, P. andinum and P. quadridichotomum. Most sources put madagascariense's stall-and-rot threshold at sustained temperatures above about 30 °C, and andinum's at about 32 °C. Quadridichotomum comes from dry forest and fears humid stagnation more than heat itself; keep it on the dry side with stronger air. Decide where these three will spend the summer before July arrives: an air-conditioned room with a fan, or a cabinet with a fan and a grow light.
Those that stall or rest
P. superbum is widely reported to stall, even go summer-dormant, once Taiwan's heat holds above roughly 30 °C; some sources report that P. wallichii stalls above roughly 32 °C, with shields bleaching and new fronds pausing. That is not death; reduce water, add air, add shade and wait for autumn.
Two special cases: ridleyi and veitchii
P. ridleyi sits between the groups: it tolerates heat better than madagascariense, but rots just as readily in stagnant damp. Airflow and roughly 30–50% shade carry most of them through. P. veitchii comes from a part of Australia with intense UV, and among the eighteen species it is the one least afraid of summer sun; a mature plant can hang on an outdoor wall in full exposure.
In one line
Keep the heat-tolerant ones ventilated, move the heat-sensitive ones before July, and let the dormant ones rest with less water until autumn.
FAQ
Which Platycerium species are the most heat-sensitive?
Madagascariense, andinum and quadridichotomum are the three to move first. Superbum and wallichii may stall in sustained heat. Ridleyi fears stagnant damp more than heat itself. Bifurcatum, willinckii, coronarium, elephantotis and hillii are comparatively heat-tolerant and can stay in place with airflow and shade.
My P. superbum has stopped growing and its shield is fading in summer. Is it dead?
Usually not. Sources note that superbum stalls or goes summer-dormant when Taiwan stays above about 30°C, and wallichii above about 32°C. It is resting: cut the water, add airflow and shade, and new fronds return once autumn cools things down.
